CoRE is a Residential Life SLE (Shared Learning Environment) that is located on the 2nd Floor of O'Connor Hall in Binghamton University. CoRE is made up of a collection of students from various majors, backgrounds, and locations who all share a common interest in computers, robotics, engineering, and technology in general. By living together, CoRE members are able to share their knowledge with each other in a way that promotes the education of both CoRE members and the University as a while.
CoRE has strong ties with both Alumni and Faculty, and it is very common to see them visiting to advise and work with current CoRE members on their academic and personal activities. Membership in CoRE ties members to a long history of customs and traditions which help members grow socially as well as academically. CoRE is a very friendly place where members make a strong effort to reach out to new members and make them part of the family-like structure.
While CoRE is always changing, there are several events it holds to promote its ties with Faculty, Alumni, and the community. CoRE Lore is a reunion dinner held in O'Connor Hall every year before Thanksgiving in which CoRE prepares a meal for former members, Alumni, Faculty and close friends to attend. During this event, stories are told by current and former members about funny events that took place throughout the history of CoRE. Another major event, Maximum Overkill, is a giant LAN party that takes place at least twice a year and is a lot of fun. Other more informal events, such as CoRE BBQs and Minimum Underkills, take place more often and are much smaller.
Besides its members and connections, CoRE also have some resources inside O'Connor. CoRE has its own room, The Pseudopod, in which we have various books, electronics equipment, tables, computers, and tools to help CoRE members work on homework or fun activites. The Pseudopod is maintained as a public access computing resource (POD) for Dickinson Community. Also located in The Pseudopod is our powerful server Ziggy, which is accessable by CoRE members to use for webpages, coding, or testing software. Of course, the room also has a TV, video games, and couches for relaxing, watching movies, and playing games together.
CoRE is always looking for new members to join. There is no requirement of experience or skill, only an interest in computers, robotics, engineering, and technology is needed. It is open to both incoming freshmen and current students living on campus. To join CoRE talk to a CoRE member or ask Residential Life. Ask well in advance of Housing Signups (or in the case of incoming freshmen, the residential form's due date) to help secure your spot on the floor. If you have any other questions about CoRE, either stop by O' Connor itself or check out the Contact CoRE page.
